Blockchain in Latin America: a silent revolution already transforming international trade

This technology has begun to redefine the rules of global trade from within. A concrete example can be found in the food industry.

In ports around the world, containers are stacked on top of each other, trucks line up in endless queues, and documents—whether paper-based or partially digitized—move from office to office. It is a familiar scene in international trade, marked by complexity, idle time, and high costs. However, in recent years, something has begun to change quietly but profoundly.

It is not a new free trade agreement or a new integration bloc, but rather a technology that, although often associated exclusively with cryptocurrencies, is revolutionizing the way goods move around the world: blockchain.

Far from the noise of financial markets, this technology has begun to redefine the rules of global trade from within. What were once long and opaque processes—such as tracing an agricultural product, validating a certificate of origin, or tracking a maritime shipment—can now be resolved in seconds. And most importantly: in a secure, immutable, and verifiable way for all parties involved. This new transparency builds trust, reduces costs, and streamlines operations that for decades have been a major bottleneck in international trade.

A concrete example can be found in the food industry. Major supermarket chains such as Walmart and Carrefour have implemented this technology to enhance product traceability and increase consumer trust, allowing people to know which farm a product came from, on what day, under what weather conditions, and under which sanitary and environmental protocols. Thanks to blockchain, this information can be recorded at the source and accompany the product all the way to the store shelf, with no possibility of alteration. And this is not an isolated case: blockchain is also being applied in the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture, textiles, electronics, and more.

New European Union sustainability regulations have also encouraged the adoption of this technology in various countries. A project by the FAO, ITC, and UNECE, for example, traces Peruvian cotton from small-scale farmers from cultivation to the consumer using DNA markers and blockchain. The program aimed to demonstrate sustainable practices in the textile supply chain and achieved improvements in efficiency, transparency, and access to green markets for these small producers.

The strategic value of this technology is also evident in scenarios of geopolitical disruption. The current trade war, with reciprocal tariffs imposed between major powers, has exposed the vulnerability of global supply chains and the lack of reliable information about the origin and journey of products. In this context, blockchain emerges as a tool that can provide greater predictability and documentary support, helping to overcome tariff barriers through verifiable certifications, facilitating compliance with stricter rules of origin, and enabling more resilient trade risk management.

There is also another ongoing revolution: smart contracts. These digital agreements are automatically executed when certain conditions are met, eliminating intermediaries, accelerating payments, and reducing default risk. In contexts where credit is scarce and traditional guarantees are difficult to obtain, blockchain can open new access pathways for companies seeking to export or integrate into global value chains.

Of course, not everything is positive. Significant challenges remain, such as interoperability between platforms, standardization of rules, and the need for a regulatory framework that provides certainty to stakeholders. But even these obstacles are beginning to be addressed through public-private initiatives and multilateral organizations such as ECLAC, UNCTAD, and the IDB, which see this technology as a key tool to improve countries’ competitiveness.

Without grand promises or sensational headlines, this technology is weaving a network of transparency that is transforming the way we trade. And in times when trust is as valuable as the product itself, blockchain is emerging as a silent but decisive pillar of this new era.
